WAYS TO USE YOUR FLASH CARDS:
Emotional Identification:
When your child is feeling calm, have them practice picking a card to represent how they are feeling. It may help to begin with a lesson or description about each feeling so that your child better understands what each feeling word represents. You can also teach your child how to use the cards by modeling - pick a card that represents a feeling you have and explain to your child why you chose this.
Emotional Reflection:
If your child struggles with emotional dysregulation, the Feelings Flash Cards can be an excellent self-reflection tool to use when your child has returned to a more calm state. Bring the cards out and ask your child to point to the feelings that they were experiencing during their period of dysregulation.
Emotional Communication:
These Feelings Flash Cards are an excellent way to encourage your child (and you!) to start talking about your feelings. These fun visuals are meant to get the conversation about feelings started, whether it is at the dinner table, in the grocery store, or after a temper tantrum. These cards offer simple words and visuals to build your child’s
emotional vocabulary, so that they can eventually develop the skills to communicate their feelings without
prompting from the cards or from adults.
Perspective-taking:
Once your child has developed awareness of their own emotional experience, they can begin to practice making guesses about the emotional experiences of others. Help your child to understand how you or others may have been feeling during a particular situation by using the cards to show them these feelings. The characters on the cards have also been designed to display specific facial expressions and body language that accompany their feeling. Take some time to study a card with your child, and point out the body language and context clues that show us why the
character is feeling that way.
Social-Emotional Practice On-the-Go:
Take your set of Feelings Flash Cards with you wherever you go, so that your child has opportunities to practice these skills during the moments when they need them most. I recommend keeping them in a carrying bag, wrapping a rubber band around them, or punching a single hole punch in the top corner of each card and connecting them together with a binder ring or keychain. For extra durability, I also highly recommend printing these cards on sturdy paper and/or laminating them.
